How do I get my VA Certificate of Eligibility?

A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) shows a lender that you may be eligible for a VA-backed home loan. You can request it through VA.gov, by mail, or through a lender, who can often get it electronically in minutes. A COE is not final loan approval.

What a COE is

The COE confirms your eligibility based on service history and shows your entitlement. Lenders use it to determine how the VA guaranty applies to your loan.

Who may qualify

Veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and certain surviving spouses may qualify if they meet the VA's service requirements. The VA makes the official determination.

Ways to request it

Through a lender: Eileen can request your COE electronically in many cases.

Through VA: apply online at VA.gov or by mail. Processing times for VA requests vary.

Documents that may be required

Veterans: often a DD-214.

Active duty: a statement of service signed by your commander, adjutant or personnel officer.

Guard and Reserve: proof of service such as points statements or discharge documents.

Surviving spouses: additional documents, depending on the situation. The VA lists the exact requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Does a COE mean I'm approved?
No. A COE confirms eligibility for the benefit. Loan approval still depends on credit, income, assets and the property.
Do I need a COE before talking with a lender?
No. Many buyers start the conversation first, and the lender helps request the COE.
